The Danube Heights

The Danube Heights are the Austrian hills through which the Danube flows, from Passau in Germany to the city of Linz, European Capital of Culture in 2009. This is an area of ancient granite rolling hills, partly forested and partly open, offering wonderful views down on the river below, across to the alps to the south, and to the southern Czech hills in the north.

While there are many highlights to walking in this area, there is no question that one of the very finest is the view down over the dramatic Danube bends at Schlögern, where the granite forces the river to double back on itself. The walker on the heights above the river enjoys dramtic views not available to the cyclists down below!

There are also castles and nature reserves to enjoy.

Rest on the Danube Heights
A special attraction of this walk are the apple and pear orchards, which in the right season offer preshly pressed juice to the thirsty walker. Some of these have just a few tables set up in the orchard, others offer a place with almost the character of a small pub. You can always expect to find homemade snacks as well.

This walk has been completely reworked from that offered in 2009. Now mainly following the southern bank of the Danube, much work has been undertaken to ensure that route finding is easy, with plenty of waymarks. Undergrowth has been removed to ensure that views are not restricted. The official opening date is 2 July 2010, but we are able to offer this walk from 29 May 2010.
