The Salzburg Lake Country 2010

This tour is not described in our brochure
The Salzburg Lake Country is the delightful countryside immediately northwest of Mozart's city of Salzburg. Here you can relax among lakes surrounded by gentle rolling hills, dotted with patches of woodland. Here you will find family farms with chickens running free and cattle reared in small herds. Transport connections to the city are excellent, so here you are free to explore the city as much as the countryside.
Panorama View of the Salzburg Lake Country
The idyllic village of Seeham, on the Obertrumersee lake, is your base for this holiday. Over sixty percent of the farmers here farm organically; the registered trademark "Salzburg Organic Breakfast" was actually created here in Seeham. The other lakes in the area are the Mattsee, the Grabensee, all of which is a nature reserve and the Wallersee, which is a little further away. The Obertrumersee and the Mattsee are connected by a boat service, and the village has a lakeshore theatre where you can enjoy concerts and drama.
Aerial View of Hotel Walkner
This is a six day single centre holidays in a family run hotel, the *** Hotel Walkner, which has an open air heated swimming pool, and a sauna. Bicycles are available for hire. The food here is excellent. Most rooms have a balcony, from which there is also a fine view over the Obertrumersee lake. You are very close to the landing stage for the boat service that plies the lakes. When you want to visit Salzburg, the bus stops outside the hotel.

Some suggested walks for this holiday
Walk 1. Follow the shore of the lake south to Mattsee, then walk inland through the Teufelsgraben or Devil's Gorge, a beautiful and dramatic circular walk through mystical woodland to a waterfall. There are also two historic restored watermills along the way. (about 4½ miles; 2½ hours).

Walk 2. Take the ship to Obertrum. Follow the eastern shore of the lake to Matzing (about 3½ miles). You can return to Seeham from here by ship if you want, or continue round the lake back to the hotel (a further 3½ miles).

Walk 3. The Chapel Walk, so called because of the wayside chapels you pass. Walk to Berg along a path offering superb views over the lake. Continue past three chapels to Dürnberg. The walk through the wooded Pfarrgraben or Priest's Gorge (less dramatic than the Devil's Gorge, of course) to Ed and then back to the lake (about 3¾ miles).

Walk 4. Follow the cheese-makers path to Berndorf, then the Via Nova, a long distance pilgrimage path through open country and past forests to the Imperial Beech - a natural monument. From here continue to Obertrum (about 12½ miles). Return by bus or ship to Seeham.
