The Salzkammergut Circle 2010

A six day circular walk that covers the both the main sights and the finest scenery in the area, including six of the lakes. While some paths are rough and steep, and on most days you have over 1500 feet of ascent, there is also the option of shortening most walks by using the local buses, trains and ships.

This walking tour includes one gentle, relaxing day, with the option of a second if you want it.

Day 1. Arrive in the pretty town of Bad Ischl, the capital of the Salzkammergut.

Day 2. Follow the valley of the River Ischl through forests and meadowland, then climb up to the Schwarzensee moors. Descend a narrow gorge to the Attersee and Unterach (about 11 miles, 7 hours).

Day 3. Walk up to the pass between the Attersee and Mondsee lakes, then follow a high level route above the lake. The pass a tarn and descend to the world-renowned Wolfgangsee. Finally along the lake to Abersee (about 13 miles, 7 hours).

Day 4. Spend a gentle day exploring the lake by boat, visiting St. Wolfgang and the White Horse Inn, or taking the steam-operated rack railway to the Schafberg plateau with its magnificent view. Finally walk or ship to Strobl (about 5 miles).

Day 5. Either take the bus towards Bad Ischl, then follow the Salt Trail along the River Traun to Bad Goisern (about 8 miles, 3 hours), or climb a mountain path 4384 feet, then make a steep descent to Chorinsky Klause and Bad Goisern (about 11 miles, 8 hours).

Day 6. Follow the Salt Trail to Hallstatt, then continue around the lake to Obertraun. Then through the wild and romantic Koppental valley to Bad Aussee (about 19 miles, 8 hours).

Day 7. Follow the Altausseer Traun river to the town of Altaussee. Walk up to the high level plateau of Blaa Alm. Return to Bad Ischl through a gorge, then along a wooded trail (about 16 miles, 8 hours).

Tour Details: 7 nights B & B in 3* inns or hotels, in rooms with shower/WC. Extra nights may be added at any point - please ask for prices. Boat crossing of Lake Wolfgangsee. Other public transport during the walk to be paid for locally. Baggage transfer.
